Obituary



Helen Louise Hawkins, age 86, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 19, 2025. Helen was born in Pennsville, Ohio to her late parents, Harry Cameron Kennard and Ruth Eleanor Lighthizer. She married the love of her life, Vernon F. Hawkins, in Indiana during the year,1955. Helen and Vernon remained close by each other’s side in marriage until his passing in 1982.


Helen attended Ohio State University, where she acquired education and training, preparing her for a career as a Mammographer and Ex-Ray technologist. She performed her work for over 60 years with Ohio Health.  She was passionate about bringing forth awareness to Breast Cancer and was also known for her love of animals, especially dogs, and her support for the ASPCA. She also was a skilled truck driver, acquiring her CDLs, and as part of her career she proudly drove the Mammogram Truck for Ohio Health. Photography was another love of Helen’s, with her favoring taking pictures of nature, family, flowers and weddings. She was very proud of her family, who she adored and loved with all her heart.


Helen is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son; Richard “Rick” Hawkins on April,5,2024 and brother; James William “Will” Kennard.


Helen is leaving her legacy to son; David Hawkins, daughter; Joyce (Phillip Elswick) Burris, brother; John (Donna) Kennard, special friend; Deidre Hunter, grandchildren; Jami (Dajuan) Mitchell, Nick (Sami) McQuistion, Heidi Hawkins, and David (Abby) Hawkins. Helen is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other loving relatives and friends.


The Hawkins family would like to invite all who knew Helen to the Boyd Funeral Home for calling hours on Monday, December 1, 2025, from 1pm to 3 pm. The funeral service will begin at 3pm. There will be an interment service held at the Green Camp Cemetery immediately following the funeral service. Pastor Josh Freshour will be officiating the services for the Helen. In leu of flowers, as requested, please make memorial contributions to the Hawkins Family. The Boyd Funeral Home is honored to be helping the Hawkins family in their time of need.
